Take my Minimum Daily Required Allowance (MDRA) of Hawai’i soul food. How do I deal with it? — Easy. I top my tank at Lilikoi café.
A quick walk west of Asian Reporter offices, about the same march from the Philippine American Chamber of Commerce of Oregon, and from everyone’s Center for Intercultural Organizing, you can fill up on Kailua local boy Dekin Hom’s family favorites. Lunch time, dinner time, anytime six days a week. "Hawai’i comfort food," he calls it.
Every time we walk onto Dekin’s Killingsworth café’s lanai, under his billowing Oregon tarp, there he is, grilling and wok-king. His wife Veth smacks my back and asks us to sit. He says she’s the brains of their operation.
Lilikoi or "passionfruit"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12058401460618325880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1997315721020407550.post-6153507143605940752011-02-10T12:00:00.000-08:002011-02-10T12:00:04.894-08:00Find us on Facebook, Like us on Facebook

Let’s talk about the food — specifically, the Kalua Pork Signature Style Sandwich ($5). Hear me when I tell you that after seeing and then eating this masterpiece, you’ll try to pay twice as much as they are asking for it. We’re talking about savory, moist, rich shredded and high quality pork that is long on flavor, my friends, topped with equally moist and delicious, slightly sweet Asian-style coleslaw. All of this comes on an open-faced Hawaiian style bun bread that looks more like focaccia in its size and shape. The extra bit of sweetness added to the whole affair by the bread alone is a ridiculously amazing treat — and the overall portion is more than enough food for two to share, if you are moderately hungry. The problem with that, of course, is the problem with all spectacular dishes — you’ll smell it, see it, and start tasting it, and you’ll gobble it up so fast that you won’t have satisfied your hunger yet.
Read more at the website and be sure to check out our facebook page for more reviews.Lilikoi or "passionfruit"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12058401460618325880noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1997315721020407550.post-89020183141329656792010-05-25T10:50:00.000-07:002010-09-11T22:42:02.450-07:00MAHALO!We wanted to thank everyone who has helped us along the way: Mr. Todd Gillies of Todbotts Triangles located at NE 28th & Alberta, Dave Schleiger of Copypilot in St. John's off Lombard, Morgan & Jesse of Dovetail Bakery on NE 31st & Alberta, Evan/Ali & the crew at the Little Red Bike Cafe in St. John's off Lombard, and all those who have supported and helped us in this venture, Thank You.Lilikoi or "passionfruit"http://www.blogger.com/profile/12058401460618325880noreply@blogger.com1
